MOAM STILL AWAITS GOVERNMENT

The Minibus Owners Association of Malawi called off a nationwide strike in November 2021, which was proposed to protest against tollgate fee which has come into force at Chingeni Toll Plaza in Ntcheu district.

The Minibus Owners Association of Malawi leadership said they come with the decision which is meant to give chance to dialogue between minibus owners and government.

"It is optimistic to see that the government is still not responding to our questions. Four months now has gone since the Minister of Information has announced the end of payments to migodi owners and callboys by minibuses.” MOAM General Secretary Coxley Kamange says.

There was no detailing on how the government was planning to remove these syndicates that have been operating since we opted for democracy.

Until now the payments of migodi owners and callboys by minibuses are still happening in many depots of Malawi.

An earlier talk between the two stakeholders has failed to reach conciliation on the matter.

The lowest tollgate fee per pass is MWK1, 700 for light vehicles with the highest being MWK 20, 000 for abnormal load type of vehicles.

Disregard of the tollgate fees attracts a one-year jail sentence and a MWK 1 Million penalty.
